Sending Email Using Another Provider

If you have an email account with us and connect to the Internet using another provider, in order to send emails using an email client e.g. Outlook Express you are required to use the providers outgoing (SMTP) server to send emails; e.g. for Blueyonder it would be smtp.blueyonder.co.uk

However if your Internet Service Provider does not allow you to use their outgoing server in conjunction with our email addresses then you can sign up for one of our services called "News and Mail". A news and mail account allows usage of our smtp server "relay.clara.net" even if you are connected with another internet service provider using a method called smtp authentication.

To use smtp authentication is, please do the following:

  • Ensure the username and password for your News and Mail account is entered where the email client prompts for the username and password for the outgoing (SMTP) mail server.
  • Ensure the outgoing server requires/uses authenticationcheckbox is selected.

Setting Up SMTP Authentication on Outlook Express

The following is an example into setting up a Clara News and Mail account in Outlook Express.

1) Open up Outlook Express and click on "tools" then "accounts".This takes you to the "Internet Accounts" window.

2) Select your Claranet account and click on "properties" (sometimes you may need to click on the "Mail" tab in the Internet Accounts window before you can select your email account).

3) Select the "Servers" tab and ensure that the outgoing server is set to relay.clara.net and that "My Server Requires Authentication" is checked. Click on "Settings" to proceed.

4) Select the "log on using" option, leave the "logon using secure password authentication" unchecked. Enter your Clara News and mail username and password and then click on "OK".

In the next window, click on "apply" and then "OK" to save the changes.

You should now be able you send emails using our outgoing mail server.

NB. Different email programs will use similar procedures to authenticate outgoing mail servers. However, if you are using another email program and require help with this process, please call technical support.
