Betfair CTO says businesses must work with service providers to combat DDoS attacks

Cooperation is key to uptime

Rorie Devine, CTO at online gambling group Betfair, has told leading business figures that they must work closely with their ISP to successfully combat distributed denial of service (DDOS) attacks.

Speaking at Claranet's most recent ‘Towards Zero-Downtime' forum, Mr Devine told delegates that there is no "magic solution" to DDOS attacks, and working with their Internet service provider is the best way to defend their business from the threat of damaging DDOS attacks.

Marino Zini, the seminar Moderator and Claranet's Head of Managed Services said:

DDOS attacks are a very real concern for any business involved in e-commerce or hosting business operations online. The forums are a great opportunity to share Claranet's expertise in business security and Internet technology. By addressing the causes of downtime, businesses can learn how best to conduct commercial activity online and plan for a reliable and secure future.

Mr Devine delivered the keynote address at the event entitled ‘Bullet-proofing e-business - avoiding single point of failure'. The seminar brought together industry leaders and technical experts to discuss high availability architecture, from network to application (Layer 1 to Layer 7) and covering networks, datacentres, hosting and applications.

'Bullet-proofing e-business - avoiding single point of failure' was the third in a series of eight business information security forums hosted by Claranet.

Each forum focuses on a different aspect of promoting "zero-downtime" for Internet-based systems and brands. All the ‘Towards Zero-Downtime' seminars are made freely available from www.claranet.co.uk after the event, along with a full list of future seminars.
