Connecting Your Charity to the Future - perspectives on a Claranet event

On Friday 26th September Claranet held the first in a series of events exploring the future of charity IT. The seminar, Connecting Your Charity to the Future, took place at the Shangri La hotel at the Shard, London.

While the views from floor 34 were certainly stunning, the attendees, from a variety of the UK’s top charities, were treated to some equally compelling perspectives from Dr Lucy Green Managing Director of Larato, Nick Torday the Managing Director at Sift Digital and Adam Fisher Head of IT at Sue Ryder. Bringing with them a wealth of experience working in IT thought leadership, digital agencies and charity IT respectively all perspectives of the charity digital/IT ecosystem were covered.

In her presentation, Dr Lucy Green looked toward 2020, discussing the way businesses are beginning to move toward a social enterprise model. In a highly revealing talk she also touched on other technology trends that charities will need to be mindful of in order to thrive such as hyper connectivity and cloud, mass micro action and 3D printing.

Nick Torday, MD of Sift Digital, works with a number of UK charities on their digital estates, and took the opportunity to take the audience through the importance of digital adoption in an organisation. He explained that digital representation is vital at board level to push the agenda through to the rest of the organisation and to make sure the digital strategy is aligned with the core business strategy.

Adam Fisher, Head of IT at Sue Ryder, the health and social care charity, provided a very entertaining and insightful look at the state of IT within a charity. Sue Ryder, with Adam’s leadership are taking a progressive approach to IT – concentrating on how their IT strategy guides and supports the business rather than, in his words consigning the IT department to “stroking tin” or managing servers, as some charity IT departments still focus on.

Following Adam’s talk there was a short Q&A, leaving people to enjoy their lunch and the impressive views. For more information about Claranet’s The Future of Charity IT series, including other events that Claranet is organising and attending please look here, or head over to our LinkedIn Group.
